There’s a very deep dark core buried within each of us. In most cases people hold back their true feelings and expressions in social situations and groups. In these social groups people tend to develop a herd mentality. However when the same people are put in situations of anonymity there is a deeper dark core has a tendency to show itself .
To get a better understanding of this dark mentality, in 1971, Stanford University set up an experiment known infamously today as the Stanford Prison Experiment. The study was simple Stanford analyzed 70 male student volunteers and divided the participants into two groups, guards and prisoners, They had the prisoners arrested and booked and transported to a university building where a prison had been created for a two-week stay. The guards were instructed that physical abuse was off limits but were free to say verbally what they wanted. In most cases they found the guards acted within the guidelines however, when the researchers placed bags over the heads of the prisoners, preventing them from identifying who was abusing them, within hours the guards had devolved into a monstrous, psychologically abusive gang to the point the study had to be cancelled.
Although the primary goal of The Stanford Experiment was to study the “herd” mentality . This study uncovered how people act when their identity is hidden. Researchers believe this comes down to accountability. When people feel there will be no repercussions from their actions they tend to become more sadistic and derive pleasure from torturing others. This is why you may see people make obscene gestures or shout obscenities in traffic ( road rage). The vehicle acts as a barrier and shelter the drivers in anonymity making them feel more powerful . Certainly you know that if that if you confronted that person face to face they wouldn’t dare say that to you. This could also be said for internet trolls (which are just the prank phone callers of the 21st century) who hide behind bogus online profiles and fake social media accounts for the purpose of entering a discussion to post comments designed to upset or disrupt the conversation.
The point is that when we feel there will be no repercussions for the things we say and do we tend to regress in our behavior and act more like primitive man than modern man. We all have had dark emotional periods at one time or the other but taking pleasure in insulting others and creating hardships for others while you cowardly hide in anonymity is a severe psychological disorder. A disorder that will prevent you from living a happy ,fulfilled life and hinder you from becoming successful on any level you desire.
Remember your goal in life is to live it the way you want to and being bitter or spiteful will never allow you to enjoy life to its fullest. If you are a victim of a maleficent person do your best to ignore them. They will only try to bring you down and try to rob you of the life you deserve. If you are the evil doer you have to find a way to rid yourself of that as fast as you can. Studies show that bitter people live poorer, have less social activity and die sooner than happy people and you dont want that do you?
