It’s amazing what can happen in the span of a few hours. Wednesday evening I was going to my weekly Toastmasters meeting. The weather in San Diego has been so nice lately that I decided to ride my Ducati 1098 motorcycle instead of taking my car. As I was cruising down the freeway at 80 mph, suddenly without warning, the rear tire exploded sending my bike madly out of control. If you know nothing about motorcycles at all I can tell you is this is bad, real bad. It’s not like a car blow out. Since a motorcycle only has 2 tires you instantly lose over 1/2 of your ability to control the bike in an instant. Within a flash I go from riding in a straight line to swerving from lane to lane with at least 6 cars around me. It felt like I hit a sheet of ice. Somehow, someway I managed to stay on the bike and get it slowed down off the road without being plowed by another car. That I cant explain
A moment like this makes you emotional and you realize what is really important. There are a lot of things that go through your mind at a time like this and I will say how much money you made as a trader is not one of them.
Tire blowout
Crashing on the freeway in So Cal has always been my worst fear. My fear has never been surviving the actual crash but surviving 4 lanes of ignorant San Diego drivers. San Diegans are some of the most pathetic crash happy drivers in the world. Most can not successfully navigate a shopping cart though Wal Mart let alone drive a vehicle.
Where the story really gets weird is the aftermath. I called every friend that I knew who had a pick up truck to come and get me but they either didn’t answer or they couldn’t make it. Eventually one friend called a friend who had a friend and that person, who I had never met before, decided to come to my rescue.
When the guy finally shows up he was as nice as could be and refused to accept any money from me whatsoever. He loaded the bike up and drove me back to my house. You just don’t find people like this anymore. As we were talking on the way home the guy ends up asking what I do for a living. So I tell him I am a day trader and all of a sudden his eyes light up . Turns out he has been to a few hotel seminars lately and has been wanting to learn how to trade! Very weird. I guess he picked up the right stranded motorcyclist. Looks like it was both our lucky day.
Now to part 2 of the story. I am not a superstitious dude but I turned a littlesticious after this incident. I bought that Ducati as a birthday present 4 years ago. Since that time the bike has stranded me twice on the highway, broke my shoulder, punctured my lung and then tried to spit me off on the freeway. She had to go!! Ironically my birthday is just a few days out so if I didn’t have enough reasons to ditch my bike I certainly had a good reason now. Plus I made +15k trading over the last 30 days from both Lincoln Alerts and Lincoln Million that I had the paper bills in hand. So Saturday I rolled over to the dealership and dropped 14k on this new Triumph Speed Triple
Triumph Speed Triple- Happy Birthday to the Lincoln
There are a few good lessons in this story outside of the obvious ” don’t take life for granite” cliche. The thing is we never know what the next moments of our personal or professional lives may bring. At a moments notice the entire situation you are in may get turned on its head. If you find yourself struggling to make it as a trader or whatever business endeavour you are in. Remember it takes just a few decent bounces your way to shift the momentum in your direction and turn it all around. Also, that works in reverse. A few bad mistakes and all you worked for can be decimated right in front of your face. Life can be so cruel.
The second is we are free in this life. Free to explore riches and successes and build the lives we want. Because I have built a successful trading business as well as a successful trading education business. I have the ability to get a wild hair up my ass and go drop 14k on a motorcycle on a moments notice just cause that’s what I want to do.
The realization is you and I are not so different. You have the same opportunities laid out in front of you as I do. As a matter of fact you may have more. The only difference is I took the first step. When I was struggling 8 years ago to be a successful trader I hunted out other successful traders and cloned their strategies and learned to think like they thought. I learned how to model my approach after them and build my trading business from the ground up just as they did. It’s amazing what a mentor can do for you. You have that ability to do this as well. The question will be- Will you take the first step?
