The Nostalgia of Tabitha, Monte Carlo’s and Steve Miller

The year was 1980 and it was our first “real” family vacation to Myrtle beach S.C. I just finished celebrating my 10th birthday into the wee hours of the morning getting slothed on RC Cola and playing spin the bottle with the girls. My brother and I were stoked to see the beach for the first time and pretty much everything else outside of the state of PA and WV.

We borrowed this wicked Kodak pocket Instamatic 110  from our Uncle to take pictures with. This camera was the shiz outside of the Polaroid instant. This was photography at it’s best 80’s stlye.

Now back then only rich people flew in airplanes so Pops put us in the 1977 Monte Carlo, slid in an 8 track of the Steve Miller Band and we were jammin all the way to S.C. You haven’t traveled until you hit the open road listening to ” Fly Like an Eagle” in a non air conditioned Mote Carlo. The drive is about 8 hours but Dad made sure it took 2 days. We stopped at every truck stop and roadside attraction.By the time we got to Myrtle Beach it was game on.

When we got to Myrtle Beach we rented a camper and stayed at this cool campground and that’s when I met the most beautiful 11 year old girl the world has ever seen, Tabitha!  I’ll never forget the moment I saw her in that hot pink sweat band and a cut off Rick Springfield T Shirt. There was just something about her maybe it’s because she was a foreigner, she was from Tennessee. I was sure we were going to be married before the trip was over and I must have fired off 200 pictures of Tabitha.

When it was time for us to leave it was clear Tabitha and I wouldn’t be getting married. All I got was a peck on the cheek, not even a phone number. I remember on the long drive home all I was thinking about was the pictures I took of her and my trip. There was no MySpace, Google + or Facebook back then so all I had to remember her by was the film in that camera. Not only that but there were no instant photos. I had to mail these bad boys off and wait 2 weeks to get them back!

When I finally got those pictures back only 3 out of the 400 I took turned out but they were the best 3 photos I’ve ever seen. Tabitha was a thousand times better looking than I remembered.Which was a good thing since I never heard from her or seen her after that.

In current times with social media and YouTube we’ve become an instant gratification society. We want it all and we want it now. But it seems that all of  our most memorable moments are the small and simple ones. There is a beauty in simplicity and the anticipation of waiting on something. Your endeavors are not so much about the destination as they are about the journey to that destination. It always feels like the longer it takes and the harder it is, the sweeter it tastes. Remember on the way to your life and business destinations take time to savor the journey.
