We are just a few weeks away from 2016! A brand New Year filled with promise and new beginnings. This is going to be the year you shed those extra pounds, start that business, take that once in a lifetime vacation and become the self fulfilled person you have always dreamed about being. 2016 is the year of you!
On second thought let me stop you before you waste any more time. 2016 will probably be like 2014-2013-2012….etc filled with a ton of of ideas but only an ounce of action.
I’m not trying to be mean. Hell, I have been guilty of making New Years resolutions in the past and not following through with them too. Life always seems to get in the way doesn’t it? In fact studies show that New Years resolutions have a shelf life of only one week! We spend more time talking and thinking about change rather than actually changing because our DNA is programmed that way. As people we are creatures of habit and find comfort in routine.
We know change sucks and it is difficult. So what do we do to fix it? What changes do we need to make to ensure ourselves we own up to our goals and make them happen? Let me share 3 things with you that I did in 2015 that allowed me to enjoy one of my best years ever. I mean 2015 was out of this world good! I earned over $250,000, had a chance to visit Stonehenge, and visited all 6 Scotch distilleries on the Isle of Islay in Scotland. I also had the amazing opportunity to take a boat ride around The Isle of Mull, go kayaking in Greenland and traveled to the arctic circle to see polar bears in the wild.
All from focusing on these 3 things!
1. Think about the big picture and how the short term sacrifices you make today will pay you for a lifetime.
You remember the movie ” Ghost Of Christmas Past” Imagine if there was a spirit that could take you back and show you what your life could have been like .
Imagine if you would have started that business in January of 2015 how far along you would be or how nice your bank account would look. Imagine if you would have stayed on that diet and went to the gym all year how you would look and feel about yourself.
Its important to look at the end goal and understand WHY you are trying to make the change. Then think about how that change will impact you and the people around you and when you are down let that be your motivation to stay strong.
2. Try committing to one thing at a time instead of making numerous radical changes in your life-
It is so much easier to go on a diet than it is to go on a diet AND exercise AND quit smoking AND start a business etc. Your mind hates change and to overload it too much with too many sacrifices too fast causes problems. Just start with one thing you really want to change then as you progress in that area add a few more things to the mix. Life itself is a marathon so do not put a mass amount of excess pressure on yourself.
3. Make promises to others and be accountable. Its just too easy for us let ourselves down but when we let others down it hurts. If you want to quit smoking for example tell it to you significant other or spouse. Tell it to your kids if you have them. Let them know you are making the change to enhance their lives and not only will they support you they will hold you accountable. So when you want to slip in a cig here and there think about the people around you that you are hurting other than yourself. You will be surprised how your mindset changes.
So let’s forget about 2015. We can’t go back and change the past but we can change the future. Let’s not allow excuses, circumstances, finances etc to get in our way of the life we not only want but the life we deserve! The great part about life is it’s never too late to start no matter what age you may be. Famous opera singer Andrea Bocelli didn’t start singing until he was 34. Now, at 57 he has sold over 150 million records. Ray Kroc didn’t start McDonalds until age 52 and Jim Morris made his Major League Baseball debut at the tender age of 35! If these people can do it so can you! The only difference is they took the first step and stayed with it
The only enemy you have is yourself. Nobody can stop you if you don’t want to be stopped. There has never been a better time than now to start living the way you want. It doesn’t matter what your education level , ethnic background, childhood upbringing or what you have done in the past if you believe you will achieve.
If you have any great stories of change you have made in your life feel free to share. I would love to hear from
