I was at a local animal charity gala a few years back. For this particular event they decided to use the ole “grab bag” charity dinner technique or should I say their version of a grab bag dinner. Before I go any further I must say I am close friends with the founders of this charity and I love them dearly but this story is just too funny not to tell.

I first must tell you this dinner was a $250 “per plate” donation so I’ve spent a cool $500 bucks for me and my guest just to walk through the door. That’s okay as I am helping a great organization plus I get to hang out with a washed up actress, a narcissistic local radio show host and the elite of San Diego. I love charity events. Anyway, here is how the “grab bag” works : A local business or individual etc, donates a piece of merchandise or service, supposedly worth a retail value of $100 minimum, to the charity. As each guest walks in they draw a number from the “grab bag” and this will be your number for the highly anticipated prize drawing segment to be held later that night.  When it’s finally time for the prize drawing portion the M.C. of the event  holds up a gift, yells out the number tagged on the gift and the person who holds that same number wins said gift. I think you have been a part of something like this before.

As the gifts are being announced these are some very generous contributions. A vintage bottle of scotch, a luxurious spa day for two and a 5 day Cabo cruise just to name a few. Then the M.C. announces “Our next prize is a $50 i tune gift card with a limited edition emergency radio and the winner is #263″ My first thoughts are ” what moron would bring crap like that to an event like this”. Just as I finished that thought I realized I AM HOLDING NUMBER 263!! SAY WHAT! I have to proudly walk up to the front of this room, under the thunderous applause of the crowd, to accept my gift.

Clock radio and i tunes gift card. You never know it might come in handy

Now I didn’t attend this event to receive a gift I was there to support a great charity so I wasn’t too disappointed. I figured it was one of those go figure moments but the go figure was about to escalate to “you gotta be kidding me” when the M.C. announced ” the winner of a free 2 hr  Helicopter Tour of San Diego for 2  is #194″ Suddenly my guest jumps up yelling and screaming in a frenzy because they are holding, you guessed it, ticket #194. Ouch.

Helicopter tour of San Diego trumps clock radio

As if this wasn’t enough my guest starts calling everybody in her cell phone contact list to share the good news . As she is talking to one of her friends I overhear, well not really overhear cause she was loud as hell. ” I think I’m going to take such and such with me”. Let it be known to all I am not Mr. such and such, double ouch. “You gotta be kidding me”  has now escalated to “somebody is walking home tonight in stiletto’s”” I have no choice but to start chugging down the free and cheap Asti Spumante champagne on the table. Not my first choice of intoxication libations.

Asti Spumante- This stuff is crap

I decide that this is the time I will introduce myself to the washed up actress I mentioned in the first part of the post. I will tell you I was so excited as I had fantasized about this actress for many years and I was finally going to meet her. I was thinking I could ask her out on a date if I had helicopter tickets but it’s going to be tough to lure her in with this all weather clock radio. When I finally meet her face to face I was stunned, she wasn’t that good looking. I thought, man the camera has been catching your good side for years. I will say she was very nice and was fun to chat with. When it was all said and done I spent $500 for a clock radio, never went on the helicopter tour and was mislead by Hollywood camera tricks and make up.

I think many of us find ourselves in a situation sometimes that goes from bad to worse to god awful in a flash. We have all had that what the hell just happened moment and many times the circumstances are out of our control For most of us trading simulates life experiences. You can find yourself on top of the world at one moment and the bottom of the gutter the next. That’s why it is important to have a support system around you, to lift you up when the going is tough. I’ve always said from the start that TheLincoln List was never a chat room but a community that has no ego’s and smart  asses in it. Trust me you never win with those rooms. If you are too afraid to ask a question then the outcome will always be bad.

My goal from the start was to make your transition into trading the least painful it needs to be. I sure wish somebody would have told me not to invite that heathen to the charity gala.My emotions would be less fragile right now. I urge you to test drive Lincoln Alerts for free by clicking here.
