Sly Stallone Blames the Downturn on Batman

During an interview while promoting his upcoming movie “The Expendables” , Sylvester Stallone said that the movie  Batman featuring Micheal Keaton was the death of the true action hero. Stallone said nobody wants to see macho muscular hard core men kicking tail, they want to see special effects and Velcro muscle outfits .

I have always liked Stallone but I disagree . Batman had nothing to do with it. People just are not interested in seeing 60 year old men, Planet Hollywood owners and B movie actors portraying their manhood with bad one liners and past glory day movie references. We all liked Rocky and Rambo but we haven’t forgot Sly’s appearances in ” Judge Dread”, “Stop or My Mom Will Shoot”, “Over the Top”, “Rhinestone” and a 1970’s porno called “The Party At Kitty And Stud’s”.

Judging from the cast of “The Expendables” that includes Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Micky Rourke, Randy Couture, and  Terry Elms. I am dripping with anticipation to see this film. Hopefully It will be playing the same week as  ” Wall Street 2″ so I can see a 60+ year old Gordon Gecko power his way through the stock market like he never missed a beat. If IFLG were a movie this would be it.

Stallone goes on to comment. “It was the first ‘Batman‘ movie,” Stallone told the Times, in reference to the 1989 movie adaptation starring Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader. He went on to say, “The action movies changed radically when it became possible to Velcro your muscles on,” a clear dig at how the trim Keaton was encased in a sculpted Bat suit for the film. Stallone joked, “I wish I had thought of Velcro muscles myself… “I didn’t have to go to the gym for all those years.”

Stallone adds that the director Tim Burton’s stylish take on the superhero story changed what audiences expected from an action flick: “It was the beginning of a new era. The visual took over. The special effects became more important than the single person. That was the beginning of the end.”
